Each ring is thrown on the potters wheel from white stoneware clay. The trees are sculpted from coils of the same clay, textured by rolling each coil over a split log to pick up the natural texture of the wood. After twisting and manipulating the coil into the branch form it is attached to the trunk of the “tree”. The leaf bundles are made by splaying the clay between two pieces of wood and formed into windswept forms that are attached to each branch with slip. The pieces are then dried and bisque fired. The pieces are then painted with an underglaze and fired to 2130 degrees. The final step is a smoke fireing.
